Father’s Day 101

And just like that, Father’s Day is just around the corner! Celebrated annually on the 3^rd Sunday of June, this year Father’s Day lands on 16 June 2019 – which is approximately, just 2 weeks away. Here’s a few fun facts regarding this special day that has been set aside to wow your dad, family and friends during the Father’s Day celebration!

1. Similar to Mother’s Day, Father’s Day is not celebrated on a specific date, rather it is celebrated on a specific Sunday. An annual celebration, Father’s Day is celebrated on the 3^rd Sunday of June.
2. Father’s Day was actually inspired by Mother’s Day! In 1909,Sonora Louise (also known as Mrs John Bruce Dodd) was at church listening to a sermon on Mother’s Day and how one should express thanks to their Mother. It inspired her to create a day just like that to honour her Father, who had single-handedly taken care of her and her siblings after her Mother had passed on.
3. After encouraging her friends, family and the church to set aside this special day, Father’s Day was first celebrated in 1910. Through her hard work and effort to push for this day, it quickly caught on to neighboring cities, states and eventually the world.
4. Father’s Day is celebrated in June because Sonora Louise’s Father’s birthday falls in June.
5. Just like how Carnations are the official flower for Mother’s Day, Roses are the official flower for Father’s Day. On Father’s Day, red roses are worn if one’s Father is still alive and white one if he has passed on.
6. According to Hallmark (yes, that greeting card company), over 72 million cards are bought and sent during Father’s Day every year – half of which are bought for Fathers.
7. In 1966, a proclamation was signed by President Lyndon Johnson for Father’s Day to be celebrated annually on the 3^rd Sunday of June.
